Fireworks at Murrayfield Stadium Concerts

Sunday, 20 May 2007

At the end of the first of the series of concerts at the Stadium, on 11th May, the community was subjected to several explosive blasts as part of a fireworks display.  These were not simply the “bangs” associated with fireworks but had much more of the characteristics of stun grenades.  The Community Council has received a number of representations objecting to these, and and along with many residents and with the aid of our local City Councillors has lobbied the promoters, Murrayfield Sport & Leisure, and the CEC Department of Environmental Health. As a result of the furore occasioned by all this, the promoters have been contacted by the CEC Community Protection Manager and it has been agreed that there will be no further fireworks.  There will also continue to be ongoing discussions between the promoters and the CEC Licensing Team regarding issues arising from these events.
When the application for a public entertainment commercial operation license for the Stadium was originally made, the Community Council asked for strict controls to curb noise and litter at these gatherings, and to prevent anti-social behaviour.  The licence was approved, subject to a number of requirements, including that the performance finished by 10:45 pm and that the noise level during the performance was not to exceed an average of 102 db (A) in any 5 minute period at the mixing desk.  However, these licence conditions were designed on the assumption of a continuous noise level, not explosions, for which a different type of limit is appropriate.
On a more positive note, the Community Council has not heard of any problems with the anti-social behaviour which has often been associated with such events in the past.
