Saturday, 14 August 2010

The email below has caused consternation.  Cllrs Balfour and Edie intend to participate in a meeting with the Local Environment Manager (and other Ward Councillors) to discuss concerns about the proposed works, and the CityWide Traffic Management Board has requested that SGN provide detailed traffic modelling to assess the effects and impact and propose mitigation measures

Email from Murray Black, Local Environment Manager, West Neigbhourhood

I refer to the recent gas works carried out at Western Corner (Cortstorphine Road junction with Ellersly Road and Saughtonhall Drive), I write now to advise that further essential gas main replacement works will  commence on 17 September 2010 for 15 weeks.  Initial consultation with public transport companies and the emergency services has been carried out under a table top meeting and a subsequent meeting will take place in due course to finalise traffic management proposals.

There will be 2 phase traffic lights, with two way traffic maintained at all times along Corstorphine Road.  North bound traffic flow from Saughtonhall Drive will be maintained.  South bound traffic flow from Ellersly Road will include, at times, a diversion via Balgreen Road.

During the forthcoming rugby events at Murrayfield, Scottish Gas Networks (SGN) have been informed that the works must cease and minimal traffic management must be in place.

This Department is fully aware that Russell Road is likely to be closed for a year from mid-October due to the Tram works and there maybe times when Balgreen Road is affected also due to the ongoing Tram works in Baird Drive.  Delays must be expected and the use of alternative routes is suggested.  This Department has requested traffic modelling to be carried out by SGN, this will assist in identifying and monitoring of 'hot-spots' and local issues.

SGN, the West Neighbourhood Road Services Team and the Traffic Signals Team will periodically monitor traffic flow and adjustments to traffic signals will be made where appropriate to maintain traffic flow throughout the peak periods.

Further updates will be forwarded as appropriate in due course.
