Mission

The Environment

To seek to conserve and, where possible, improve the 'character' of the streets, homes and other buildings in the area. The Council will:-

Scrutinise all applications for planning approvals and, where appropriate, raise objections; where it seems proper, suggest alternative courses of action for consideration by applicants and the City Council; and make efforts to preserve the tree-lined nature of many streets in the community.

To seek to maintain a clean, tidy and 'living' environment in the area the Council will:-

Bring influence to bear on the City Council to maintain regular litter collections and street cleansing; seek to persuade residents to observe local bye-laws and prevent their dogs from fouling streets and pavements; and use community council funds, where available, to effect environmental improvements.

Licensing and Public Events

To protect residents from any deleterious effects of alcohol licensing and public entertainment events the Council will:-

Scrutinise applications for liquor licences and, where appropriate, raise objections; develop relationships with licensees and hotel and bar managers to encourage them to adopt measures which support the objective; and monitor activities at Murrayfield Stadium against the Community Council's adopted policy.

Public Safety

To support residents in seeking to make their homes and property secure the Council will:-

Maintain close relationships with the Lothian and Borders Police force and invite the Community Police Officer to speak at every meeting of the Council; and support Neighbourhood Watch Groups in any schemes to protect vulnerable residents.

Other Community Support

To provide support to other community groups in the area the Council will:-

When funds are available, make grants for specific projects which are approved by the Community Council and are within its remit.

Communications

To keep residents informed of the Council's deliberations the Council will:-

Meet in public at least six times a year; provide a folder of information and meeting reports in Balgreen Public Library, Murrayfield Parish Church, Saughtonhall United Reformed Church and the Church of the Good Shepherd; publish quarterly reports in the Murrayfield Churches Newsletter; and provide notice boards for community information, currently at Roseburn and Western Corner.

The Arts

To give support to the social, cultural and artistic skills of residents the Council will:-

Establish a working group to consider and report on how to achieve this.
